BurialHe was buried at Trinity Anglican Cemetery, Galt, Waterloo County.
NoteAlexander Rennie has not been found in the 1851 census. Susannah Rennie, with one caveat, appears in Galt in 1851. She is in the household of James and Susannah Scott of Galt. James is a carpenter, age 42, born in Scotland, and Susannah Scott, also born in Scotland, is 28. The one difficulty with Susannah's listing is that she is shown as a spinster. This is probably an error, for on the next page, a statistical page and essentially a line by line continuation of the previous page, she is shown as married. We will note that Susannah Rennie, age 73, is shown as a Presbyterian. The Scotts are shown as Presbyterian.

Which brings us to the 1861 census.

Both Alexander and Susannah Rennie are in Galt and apparently in the household of, once again, James and Susan Scott. Alexander is 79 and of the Church of England; Susan Rennie is 81 and also shown as Church of England. James Scott, carpenter, age 51, is shown as United Presbyterian, but his wife, Susan Scott, 37, is shown as Church of England.

Susannah Christie Rennie's death in 1865 predates death registrations and a death registration for Alexander Rennie has not been found. Rosemary Ambrose, however, of the Waterloo Region branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, has extracted death notices from the Dumfries Reformer. For our purposes, these cover 1860-65, and, separately, 1866-1870.

Under 1860-65 we find extracted from the November 1, 1865, edition of the paper the following:

In Galt on Tuesday last, wife of Alexander Rennie age 86. Funeral from residence of James Scott, carpenter.

The 'Tuesday last' was interpreted as being October 24th, but November 1st was a Wednesday and Susannah's gravestone dates her death to Oct. 31, 1865.

Mrs. Ambrose extracts the following from the August 18, 1869, edition of the Reformer.

Alex Rannie 13 August, 1869. In Wellesley, at his son's residence, aged 87 years. He was a native of Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Norma Huber, sometime prior to 1990, transcribed the Trinity Anglican Cemetery in Galt. This shows the following:

In memory of Alexander Rennie who died Aug. 13, 1869, aged 87 years. Also Susannah Christie his wife died Oct. 31st, 1865, aged 85 yrs. 5 mos. Natives of Aberdeen, Scot.

As noted, Alexander Rennie is said to have died at the residence of his son in Wellesley (township). For this, we have two candidates. George Rennie, age 58, appears in the 1861 census. Also there is Archibald Rennie, age 46. Both Archibald and George are of the Church of England. We may note that apparently visiting with George and his family in Wellesley at the time of enumeration is Mrs. Scott of Galt, so stated, with daughters Susan and Elizabeth, ages 2 and 1 respectively. Everyone in the household is shown as Church of England.

Not uncommonly, 'Mrs. Scott', Susan or Susannah, and daughters Susan and Elizabeth, were enumerated twice. Once with George, who we must believe to be her brother, and once at home in Galt with her husband.

(The pages for the 1842 census of North Dumfries have been examined. A couple of the pages that cover the Village of Galt are badly mangled and information is missing. A James Scott appears, but not enough of the line has survived to be able to read his trade. The name Rennie does not appear, but may be missing as the result of the damage.)

Which brings us to the children of Alexander Rennie and Susannah Christie. How do we know that John Blake Rennie is their son? To this point, there is almost no direct evidence. We do know, however, that John Blake Rennie's first born son was Alex Christie Rennie. It will do to begin with.
