Alexander Harvie McArthur
ID # 5152, (1827-1919)
Father | Daniel McArthur (1796-1875) |
Mother | Catharine McMillan (1792-1875) |
Birth | Alexander Harvie McArthur was born on 27 August 1827 at Dumfries Twp., Gore District, Upper Canada. |
Marriage | He married Jane Maria Buchanan, daughter of Alexander Buchanan and Elizabeth Leece, on 3 July 1857 at Galt, Waterloo Co., Canada West. GS2987 First Church, Galt By license at Galt, July 3rd, 1857 Alexander McArthur Machinist Blenheim Oxfrd Jane Maria Buchanan spinster ...Dfs Witnesses James Keachie and AlexBuchanan There is a bit of scribble prior to the abbreviation for Dumfries. It is illegible, but probably indicates North Dumfries. Certainly the marriage was at Galt. Rev. Strang was the minister at First Church from 1833 to 1857. He is buried in section 4 of Mountview Cemetery and his gravestone shows his death date as 22 October, 1857. He apparently served the congregation until his death. The handwriting on the page appears to be that of James Strang, or at least consistent with that of the same person for some decades. A marriage lower down on the same page as that of Alex and Jane Maria indicates that it was conducted by Rev. Acheson, who succeeded Strang. It does appear that Rev. Strang married Alex and Jane Maria. |
Death | He died on 15 May 1919 at Billingsville, Cooper County, Missouri, at age 91. |
Burial | He was buried at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Booneville, Missouri. |
Note | It appears that Alexander's aunt, Janet McArthur, was married to Alexander Harvie Jr. and it is reasonable to believe that Alexander Harvie McArthur is named after him. At the time of Alex's marriage, he is described as a machinist in Blenheim. An Oxford County Gazeteer dating from the early 1860s, records in Plattsville an A. McArthur & Co, founders, manufacturers of reapers, mowers and agricultural implements. Mitchell and Co.'s Canada Classified Directory for 1865-66, page 317, lists A. McArthur and Co. It is doubtful that they were present at Plattsville much later. By 1871, Lovell's Province of Ontario Directory, page 705, shows a John Nichol as a maker of agricultural implements and he is likely the new proprietor of the same business. Alex and Jane Maria are buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Booneville, Cooper Co., Missouri. Some transcription work for this cemetery has been done at Find-a-Grave and such death information that has been found is taken from this web site.
