Margaret McArthur
ID # 5150, (1823-)
Father | Daniel McArthur (1796-1875) |
Mother | Catharine McMillan (1792-1875) |
Birth | Margaret McArthur was born in 1823 at Dumfries Township, Gore District. |
Marriage | She married William Barnard on 11 January 1843 at Dumfries Township. GS2987 First Church (Galt) Marriages Nbr. 137 (By Rev. James Strang) By license in Dumfries on January 11, 1843 William Barnard and Margaret McArthur, both of Dfs (Dumfries) Witnesses Arch'd Buchanan and Dronsfield (Dransfield) Thornton The reproduction of the First Church record images on GS2987 is not uniformly clear, though with the marriage of William and Margaret it is quite readable. The United Church of Canada Archives has the First Church marriages on microfilm LCM-30 and a copy of the page that includes this marriage is to hand. It's rather clearer, but adds nothing. The known (surviving?) Gore District Marriage register dates from 1842, but Reverend Strang's submissions do not begin until the marriages of March of 1844. Even if the marriage record was present in the Gore District volume, it's doubtful that there would be more information. The recording of parentage was not done until the county registers came into being in approximately 1858. |
Note | Intial information about birth years for the Barnards is taken from the 1871 census at Beverly Township in Wentworth County, A5 pages 7 and 8. Considering the time gap in births between Henry and Robert, there were likely more children. The 1861 census should be helpful. Note: This family, as shown, is the subject on ongoing research. That Margaret McArthur married William Barnard is clear enough. That the children shown as they appear in the 1871 census in Beverly and the William and Margaret Barnard as being our William and Margaret and shown as their parents, is not clear. Mary Jane married Aaron Beasley and in the marriage registration gives her birth place as Tillsonburg. This is in Oxford County and not unreasonable, but cemetery transcriptions for Oxford, though extensive, are no help. The first born shown, Henry, was born a year after the recorded marriage for Margaret and William, so that this family belong to the McArthur line is not unreasonable. Some McArthur family history, as provided by Ben Neff, clearly places this family in the McArthur family tree. At the time of the 1851 census, the family was in Norwich Township in Oxford County. Here are with them children Henry, age 9; Daniel, age 5; and Catherine, age 3. This is the only record found to date for Daniel and Catherine. They are not with the family at the time of the 1861 census in Beverly and so they may have died. |
