Note | A birth registration for Smith McKenzie or Smith Watson has not been found. He is with his mother and Thomas Watson in the 1881 and 1891 censuses. He is with his mother at the time of the 1901 census. It is from the 1901 census that we take his date of birth, February 3, 1880. We do not have a date of death for Hugh McKenzie, and so we are left guessing. He was probably Hugh's son but raised with the name Watson and seems to have lived with this name until at least his marriage in 1912. He is also to be found as Smith B. Watson in a border crossing record in 1923. Smith married Katherine Ross in Ingersoll in 1912 and gives his place of birth as Sheffield. By 1930 they and their two children are in Detroit. The 1930 and 1940 censuses show Smith's place of birth as New York while his wife and children are shown as being born in Canada. It's entirely a guess, but Smith may have sought a birth registration for immigration purposes and was then told by a family member that he was born in New York. His 1942 'old man's' draft card shows his place of birth as Tonawanda, New York. |
