George Wetlaufer, 24, bachelor, farmer, Lutheran. Born and residing North Easthope. Parents Ludwig and Annie Wetlaufer.
Elizabeth Rannie, 23, spinster, Presbyterian. Born and residing North Easthope. Parents John B. and Caroline Rannie.
Witnesses James Rannie of North Easthope and Elizabeth Hutchison of Wellesley.
On November 23, 1874, at North Easthope, by Rev. John J. Cameron, M.A.

The date that the clergyman submitted the record of marriage for George and Elizabeth is not shown, but the township clerk did not submit the record until the end of the first half of 1875 - the end of June. For which reason, the Archives of Ontario has the marriage registered under 1875.

George's surname is spelled with one T on the marriage registration, but with two T's in most records. This includes the family's gravestones in Palermo Cemetery and so 'Wettlaufer' is the spelling used here.

DeathHe died on 13 November 1931 at Palermo, Trafalgar Twp., Halton Co., at age 81.
BurialHe was buried on 15 November 1931 at Palermo Cemetery, Trafalgar Twp., Halton Co..
NoteSee notes under wife Elizabeth. George and his family were in Trafalgar Township of Halton County by the time of the 1901 census. In 1906, the Union Publishing Company in Ingersoll printed a Farmers and Business Directory for Halton, Waterloo and Wellington, of which see page 45, Trafalgar Township.

This places Blake Wettlaufer on lot 28 of the south part of concession 2 and it places George Wettlaufer on lot 29 of the north part of concession 2. George is shown as a freeholder and Blake is shown as a farmer's son. Their post office is shown as Palermo.

George Wettlaufer's date of birth isn't entirely readable on the 1901 census page in Trafalgar Township. It does date his birth to September of 1850. His death registration shows his date of birth as September 14, 1850.

His place of birth, North Easthope Township, is as shown on his marriage registration and is likely correct, considering that his parents appear there in the 1851 census. This census was not started until January of 1852 and was to ask the question: What is your age as of your next birthday? This would have placed George's age as of his second birth as 2, which it shows. George was a twin. He was born with a sister Catherine.

George's death registration places his birth at Philipsburg (Phillipsburg). This village was just over the township line in Wilmot Township of Waterloo County and may have been a postal address for the family. Originally, this post office was Philipsville, established in 1851. In 1852 the name was changed to Phillipsburg. Either way, this was in Wilmot Township and North Easthope is almost certainly correct for the place of George's birth.

(So far as the family's postal address is concerned, Amulree in North Easthope was the more likely. See note under Adelyn.)

Phillipsburg is probably not a total write-off so far as the exteded Wettlaufer family is concerned, however. In 1907, the Union Publishing Company of Ingersoll printed a Farmers and Business Directory for the counties of Huron, Middlesex and Perth. North Easthope township shows a generous list of Wettlaufer households - 12 of them, actually - none of whom will be children of George and Elizabeth, but will be George's brothers, nephews, cousins, etc., And they show a goodly variety of post offices that the extended family used for their given address. Four Wettlaufer households used Phillipsburg as their postal address. George's son Eckhardt probably had some memories of such when he filled out the form reporting George's death in 1931. (Phillipsburg as a post office ceased to exist as of 1915.)

Death reg. 017826-31 Trafalgar Township, Halton County
George Wettlaufer, age 81, died November 13, 1931. Place of death as well as residence Halton County, Trafalgar Township, Palermo. Residence at place of death 5 years. Widowed. Born Philipsburg, Ontario, on Sept. 14, 1850. Parents Henry and Anna Wettlaufer, both born Germany. Informant E. R. E. Wettlaufer, Palermo, son. Burial November 15th, Palermo United Church Cemetery.

If 'Henry' was indeed the name of George's father, then his father probably had two given names. Our best information from early census years is that his father's name was Ludwig.
