Mary Wyllie
ID # 4678, (1814-1897)
Birth | Mary Wyllie was born in 1814 at Scotland. |
Marriage | She married Alexander Buchanan, son of John Buchanan and Margaret McArthur, on 27 September 1842 at First Church, Galt, Ontario. GS2987 First Church, Galt (Presbyterian) Nbr. 121 By license in Waterloo Sept. 27, 1842 Alexander Buchanan Mary Wyllie, widow, both of Dumfries Witnesses James Wyllie and William Buchanan The record does not specify whether the marriage was in the village of Waterloo or in Waterloo Township. Considering the manner of other entries by Rev. Strang, it seems rather more likely that the marriage was held in Waterloo Township. The witness, William Buchanan, will have been Alex's brother. Alex Buchanan's obituary tells that Mary's maiden name was Allan. |
Death | She died on 19 February 1897 at Galt, Waterloo Co., Ontario. |
Burial | She was buried at Section 2, Mountview Cemetery, Galt. |
Note | According to the obituary for Alexander Buchanan from the Galt Reporter, Mary was the widow of George Wyllie and that she was the sister of James Allan, shoemaker. Since most family burials were at First Church Cemetery at High Park until it was closed to new burials in 1869, the remains and stones were moved to Mountview in the early 1880s. Wyllie and Allan information was included on the stone or stones at the Buchanan plot at Mountview. The big piller stone has George Wyllie, died 7 Sept. 1841, age 34 years and James Allan, died 21st December 1855, age 72 years, natives of Ayrshire. The statement in Mary's obituary that James Allan, shoemaker, was her brother will be correct. He is not, however, the James Allen whose name is inscribed on the Buchanan stone at Mountview. This James Allan would have been born approximately 1783. He was living with the Buchanan family at the time of the 1851 census, is age 69 and said to be a 'gentleman' - in other words, retired. The family would seem to have him in their care as they did John Leece, the brother of Alex's first wife Elizabeth Leece. This James Allan is Mary's father. Mary's birth year and birth place are taken from the 1881 census taken at Galt. James 'Allen', so spelled in her will (GS1 reel 404, Waterloo Co. Surrogate Court, I 3182) and specifically said to be her brother, was living at the time that Mary died in 1897. His wife is shown as Mary Ann and two of their children as James Andrew Allen and Thomas Wesley Allen. There was a Sarah Allan, age 13, in the Buchanan household at the time of the 1871 census taken at Galt: 1871 census page 5 (Galt D-2, Waterloo Co) family number & household number 17 BUCHANAN, Alex, 75, born USA, UP Pres., Scotch origins, married BUCHANAN, Mary, 57, born Scotland, UP Pres., Scotch origins, married BUCHANAN, Heneratta, 34, born Ontario, UP Pres. Scotch origins, ALLAN, Sarah, 13, born Ontario, UP Pres. Scotch origins This above takes an interesting turn in that James and Mary Ann Allan, or Allen, had at least two daughters, Agnes and Sarah. On the same day, 16 September 1879, they married two brothers, George and Theodore Weaver respectively. The parents of Agnes and Sarah are named as James and Mary Ann. The witnesses for both marriages were Duncan and Susannah Ferguson. Of course, Susannah was the sister of Alexander Buchanan, second husband of Mary Allan Wyllie Buchanan. At the time of the 1881 census, both Weaver families are living in Galt and each have one child. Mary's marriage to her first husband, George Wyllie, appears to have been of short duration. The stone in section 2 of Mountview indicates that George died Sept. 7, 1841, at age 34. Familysearch has a transcription of the following marriage in their database: Scotland marriage: 1561-1910 George Wyllie and Mary Allan Event date 14 Nov. 1834 Event place Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland This is probably the George Wyllie who is in the Buchanan plot in Mountview. Oddly, Mary's name does not appear on the gravestone and a certain place of burial has not been found for her. Death reg. 025247-97 Galt, Waterloo Co. Mrs. Alex Buchanan died Feb 19th, 1897. Age 83. Residence 4 North Water. Widow. Born Scotland. Presbyterian. Physician Dr. Acheson. Informant A. Buchanan. |
