Note | A transcription of the Dumfries Reformer for February 11, 1863, shows the death of Mrs. MacKenzie on 6 February 1863 in Beverly. (Her stone at Mountview shows February 5.) She is said to be 86 and the mother of John and William MacKenzie. Her stone also states that she was 86. According to the 1851 census, Ellen, age 73, was living with John and Margaret McKenzie. At the time of the 1861 census, she is still with them, though described as Eleanor, age 83. It seems reasonable that she is one and the same person as the mother of John McKenzie, the husband of Margaret Buchanan. The obituary does not say so, but considering that Donald and Simon McKenzie are believed to be Ellen's sons and that they reside in the Gore of Beverly, she may well have been with them when she died. The pages of First Church burials only begin in 1855 and seem rather hit and miss or incomplete thereafter. Mrs. John McKenzie gets a mention in February of 1863 and shows her as 86. The date of his burial is not shown. |
