Mary Scott
ID # 4504, (1824-1892)
Father | William Scott (1787-1841) |
Mother | Janet Burnet (1797-1872) |
Birth | Mary Scott was born on 24 October 1824 at Dumfries Township, Gore District. |
Marriage | She married John Lake on 21 November 1845 at Dumfries Township. MS248 reel 1, Vol. 4, page 35, Gore District Marriage Register Marriages by Rev. James Strang, Presbyterian Minister, Galt John Lake and Mary Scott, both of Dumfries, married on November 21, 1845. Witnesses Andrew Scott and Thomas Lake. By license. District and County marriage registrations are usually indefinite as to the marriage location, limiting the record to the district or county. With this marriage we also have First Church's marriage book to inform us. The pertinent page appears on microfilm GS2987. It reads: Marriage 203 By license in Dumfries John Lake and Mary Scott, both of Dumfries Andrew Scott and Thomas Lake, witnesses. November 21st, 1845. The date of marriage as written in the church's marriage register usually appears at the beinning of the registration. With this marriage, it was at the end, though it's clear enough from the context that it was intended for the Lake-Scott marriage. Add to that, Rev. Strang informed the Gore District registrar at Hamilton, as shown above, and stated the date of marriage as November 21st, 1845. |
Death | She died on 26 June 1892 at Galt, Waterloo Co., at age 67. |
Burial | She was buried on 28 June 1892 at Mountview Cemeterery, Galt. |
Note | For the following, see Funeral Notice Cards of Waterloo County, 1851 to 1980, Norma Huber, 2001, per Waterloo Region Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society: Died in Galt, on Sabbath, 26th June, at six o'clock a. m., Mary Scott, Relict of the late John Lake, Aged 67 years, 8 month and, 2 days. Funeral on Tuesday afternoon, 28th inst., at 2.30 o'clock, from her late residence, Maple Street, to Mount View Cemetery. Friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend. Galt, June 27, 1892. Mary's date of birth is calculated from her age as shown on her funeral card. Given the above information, it seems reasonable that Mary was buried in Mountview Cemetery. Her place of burial does not show up on any transcription, however, and the cemetery has no record of her burial in their computers. We record here Mary's place of burial as being Mountview per her funeral card, but, certainly, there is a mystery here. On her death registration, Mary's place of birth is given as South Dumfries. This locale will have been correct, except that there will have been no north or south when Mary was born. Death reg. 017903-92 Galt, Waterloo Co. Mary S. Lake, died 26 June 1892, age 67, widow, Presbyterian, born South Dumfries. Informant Andrew Scott. Physician Dr. Wardlaw. |
