Andrew Carrick
ID # 4459, (1862-1948)
Father | Alexander Carrick (1814-1899) |
Mother | Janet McBean (1825-1901) |
Birth | Andrew Carrick was born on 29 November 1862 at North Dumfries Twp., Waterloo Co., Canada West. |
Marriage | He married Jean Warren. |
Death | He died on 21 December 1948 at San Francisco County, California, at age 86. |
Burial | He was buried at Riverview Cemetery, Multnomah, Portland, Oregon. |
Note | Andrew was age 18 and with his parents at the time of the 1881 census in North Dumfries. After the 1881 census we lose sight of Andrew. He is not with the family in North Dumfries at the time of the 1891 census. He is likely the Andrew Carrick, born in Canada, that we find in Phelps, Nebraska, in the 1900 U.S. census. There, he is a minister and he shows his birth place as Canada. He states that his father was born in New York and his mother in Canada (correct on both). He is married to Jennie A. She states that she was born in New York, but that both her parents were born in Canada. They have with them a son Loyd said to be born in North Dakota. Andrew's birth is given as November of 1862; Jennie's is given as September of 1872; Loyd's is given as August of 1893. They are said to have been married 8 years. Andrew was likely away from home being educated by the time of the 1891 census in Canada. Or perhaps he was already in the U.S. and embarked on his career. He and Jennie may have been married in the U.S. No marriage registration has been found for them in Canada. At the time of the 1910 U.S. census, the family is in Portland, Oregon. Andrew is still a minister and Jennie is a music teacher. Loyd, still with them, is age 16. Information on the page indicates that they only had one child. The birth information is essentially the same. In 1920 the family of three are still together at Portland. Andrew and Jean are alone in 1930 and still at Portland. Lloyd is no longer with them and is almost certainly the Lloyd Carrick in San Francisco in the 1930 census. A death registration for Andrew Carrick has been found in California at San Francisco. It shows his mother's maiden name as McBean. In his last years, Andrew must have gone to San Francisco to live with his son Lloyd and, with his mother's maiden name been given, it is safe to add Andrew's family to the tree. A death registration for his wife has not been found and we do not know her maiden name. Birth information for Jennie, or Jean, and Lloyd and his family are taken from various census pages, but I am now especially indebted to Find-a-Grave for the palce of burial for Andrew and Jean. This shows Jean's maiden name and their places of birth and death. The following story is excerpted from a web page for the oldscotchchurch.org: HISTORY OF THE TUALATIN PLAINS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH In 1909, Dr. Andrew Carrick began the longest pastorate in this church's history, which lasted 28 years until his retirement on April 4, 1937. He commuted from Portland by horseback and later by bicycle. He was a pulpit supply pastor who was requested to stay each year by vote of the congregation. Dr. Carrick was much beloved by his congregation and his death in December, 1948, was greatly lamented. |
