Note | When the Carricks went to Ashfield Township, prior to the 1861 census, they had a portion of lot 22 on a survey that ran along the Lake Huron shore line. A map extracted from an 1879 atlas shows the portion of the lot on the lake and it is identified as the Carrick Estate. A copy of this map is to be found on the The Canadian County Atlas Digital Project website of McGill University. The names and approximate birth years for the children of Andrew and Isabel are extracted from census information. For the moment, the list of children is 12 in number. Andrew and Isabella were in Brantford Township of Brant County at the time of the 1851 census. There, he is shown as a 'carpenter wheelright'. With them are Robert Andrew age 11; Jane age 9; Mary age 7; Margaret age 5; William age 3; and Alexander James age 1. The 1851 census was not enumerated until January of 1852 and the question of age to be asked was: What is your age as of your next birthday? The years of birth are approximated based on this formula. The list of children for Andrew and Isabella is expanded in the 1861 and 1871 censuses. By 1861, the family was in Ashfield Township in Bruce County. The 1861 census shows that Andrew has a 'tanery' (tannery). Following Andrew's death in 1869 (see below), the 1871 census shows a statistical page for Ashfield Township. This is entitled, page 2, Return Of Industrial Establishments. In this we are shown a tannery operated by William 'Caraick' (ill written, but as apparently spelled). It is steam operated and appears to be a one man operation, but the figures suggest that it was successful. (See notes under Isabella for the rendering of the family's name in 1871.) Death information for Andrew is taken from a transcription of the Dumfries Reformer issue of December 15, 1869. It states that he died on December 9, 1869, in Ashfield, Huron County, at the age of 51 years and 10 months. It tells that he was a brother of Alex and William Carrick of Dumfries. The transcription is the work of Rosemary Ambrose via the Waterloo Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. A death registration has not been found. See the Huron County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society for a transcription of Kintail Cemetery in Ashfield Township. This appears on microfilm MS451 reel 100. The condition of Andrew's stone was evidently broken and worn at the time of transcription and not entirely readable though most of this has to do with the verse. Such as the transcribers were able to record reads as follows: Top section (2 pieces) In memory of Andred Carrick / died Dec. (Oct.?) 9, 1869 (bottom) Aged 51(?) years & 10 months. parts of verse illegible, though quoted in part (old white slab broken) back of top half His wife Isabel Hill Died July 1915 aged 95 yrs 11 mos. We may take Mrs. Ambrose' extraction from the Dumfries Reformer as telling the accurate story. It does appear that Isabella's inscription was added to the original stone. The omission of the nbr 11 (11 July 1915) from her death date probably had to do with the crumbling of the stone. CanGenWeb has a photo of their stone, evidently a new one recently erected. |
