ID # 4374, (1810-1884)
Birth | Henry Culham was born in 1810 at Wales. |
Marriage | He married Desdemona Ann Munn on 29 April 1835 at Home District. MS248 reel 2, Vol. 10, page 218 Home District marriage register Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by John Culham, Wesleyan Preacher. On April 29, 1835 Henry Culham and Destimona Munn, both of the township of Etobicoke. By license. Witnesses Truman Willcox and Hiram Munn John Culham, the Wesleyan preacher, was evidently a member of Henry's family. Henry shows up as a witness in at least one other marriage. This was in 1833. The registration does not say so, but, probably, the marriage of Henry and Destamona Ann was conducted in Etobicoke. The Rev. John Culham died in Etobicoke on Dec. 2, 1852. See page 69 of Vol. 2, Death Notices from the Christian Guardian, 1851 to 1860, Rev. Donald A. McKenzie, Global Heritage Press, 2011. John's wife Ann died Oct. 15, 1860. See page 81, Vol. 4, Obituaries from Ontario's Christian Guardian, 1861-1870. As mentioned, Ann Culham died in October of 1860, but her obituary did not appear in the Guardian until the issue of April 24, 1861. |
Marriage | He married Christian Harvie. |
Death | He died on 9 December 1884. |
Burial | He was buried at Sheffield Cemetery, Beverly Twp., Wentworth Co.. |
Note | Apparently, Henry Culham was raised in Wales and Upper Canada, and his family settled in Etobicoke Township where he married. At some point he took his wife and any children to Beverly Township and was located near the village of Sheffield. It appears as though Henry was raised a Wesleyan Methodist, but in Beverly he and his family attended the United Brethren Church at Sheffield. John A. Cornell, in his work The First Church of Beverly, McClelland & Stewart, Toronto, 1921, names Henry Culham as a member of the first board of trustees of the Beverly church. Page 26 indicates that it was first called The Beverly Reformed Christians. The physical building was completed in 1834, though there was a delay because of the cholera epidemic. Eventually, the church became known as the United Brethren Church and is now a part of the United Church of Canada. For the following, see Men of Upper Canada, Militia Nominal Rolls, 1828-1829, Elliott, Walker, and Stratford-Devai, Toronto, Ontario Genealogical Society, 1995. A Henry Culham is listed in the 2nd company of the 1st Regiment West York Militia. This regiment draws from townships that include Etobicoke. The list is dated 1826 and since Henry was not required to attend until he was 19, this may not be the right Henry. There is, however, a Turpin 'Cullum' and a John 'Cullum' in the 8th company and they are no doubt kin. Death reg. 020112-84 Beverly Township, Wentworth County Henry Culham, age 74, died Dec. 9, 1884. Farmer. United Brethren. Physician and informant Dr. Smith of Beverly. |
