NoteThere is some evidence that Donald McArthur may have been the correct name, but more often the name Daniel is used and appears as Daniel on his gravestone at Mountview. This tree has settled for Daniel.

It was thought for some time by this researcher that Daniel McArthur and his sister Jennet were brother and sister to Margaret McArthur, the wife of John Buchanan. It's still possible, but now seems unlikely. Since Mary McArthur probably is sister to Margaret, then it seems more reasonable that Daniel and Jennet were niece and nephew. Or there may have been no relationship at all - the jury's out.

Daniel McArthur, so spelled, appears in the 1819 Dumfries assessment. His concession or lot number is not given.

Also present is a Charles McCarty in both the 1818 and 1819 assessment. Daniel's name, once or twice in later years, does get rendered as McCarty.

Charles McCarty may (or may not) be the Charles McArthur who appears in the 1851 North Dumfries census with his father Lachlan McArthur. Their burial record appears in a transcription of the pergola at St. Andrew's Park (actually the site of St. Andrew's Cemetery) in Cambridge/Galt.

Transcriptions read as follows:

E2-20 IMO/Charles McArthur/who died March 8, 1865/aged 63 years/a native of Inverness-shire/Scotland

D2 IMO/Lachlan McArthur a native of Inverness-shire/Scotland/who died Dec. 6, 1855/in the 83rd year of his age.

To this point, no evidence has been found connecting Charles or Lachlan to Daniel McArthur or other Dumfries McArthurs.

See The Dickson Papers, MS5 reel 3, C1, pages 19 & 20.
Donald McArthur purchased from William Dickson the south half of lot 2 on the 10th concession of Dumfries Township. This is described as being 100 acres. This is dated August 30, 1822.

See MS700 reel 1, 1832 Census for Dumfries Township East of the Grand River, image 13. This shows Donald McCarthie on concession 10, lot 2, with 100 acres.

Familysearch has the 1842 Dumfries census. (It is labelled St. David's Ward, Toronto, as this is how it is labelled by Library and Archives Canada. An examination of the pages makes it quite clear that it is Dumfries Township. ) See image 9 of this census. This still shows Donald McArthur on C10-L2. The portion of the lot is nearly unreadable but is apparently the south part.

Finally, see the 1861 Tremaine's Map as it appears in Our Todays and Yesterday, Andrew Taylor, 1970. This shows Daniel McArthur on the south part of C10-L2.
