Christiana Buchanan
ID # 4281, (1823-1910)
Father | John Buchanan (1773-1829) |
Mother | Margaret McArthur (1781-1844) |
Birth | Christiana Buchanan was born in 1823 at Dumfries Township, Gore District. |
Marriage | She married Washington L. Wood on 18 January 1844 at Dumfries Township. |
Marriage | She married Lysander S. Bradish on 12 July 1860 at Kent County, Michigan. The Kent County, Michigan, Dibean Marriage Index, provided by Jack and Marianna Dibean, shows the following: Bradshan, Lysander S. Bradshan, Buchanan, Christiana 12 July 1860 The transcription shows Lysander with the surname Bradshan. Unquestionably, going by Christianna's name in the 1871 census at Galt, plus the name on her gravestone at Mountview Cemetery and her obituary, Lysander's name was Bradish. The following is as it appears in Kent County Court House records. It has the advantage of showing the witnesses. The spelling of Lysander's name is shown as interpreted by both transcribers. Bradshan, Lysander S. (w) 43, Grand Rapids and Christiana Buchanan (w) 35, same place. 12 July 1860 at Grand Rapids by C. Smith. G. W. Dickinson, and L. R. Dickinson, both of Grand Rapids, witnesses. Considering the 1860 census at Grand Rapids and Christianna's stone in Mountview Cemetery in Galt, Bradish is correct. According to the 1860 census at Grand Rapids, Lysander Bradish worked as a farm laborer at the farm of George Dickinson and his wife Louisa. Their being present as witnesses may have been a gesture of friendship, or they may have been related to Lysander. There is no evidence for a blood relationship, however. |
Death | She died on 23 December 1910 at Galt, Waterloo Co., Ontario. |
Burial | She was buried at Mountview Cemetery, Galt. |
Note | Death reg. 030878-10 Galt, Waterloo Co. Christian Bradish died December 23, 1910, at the Galt Hospital. Born near Branchton in 1823, age 87. Residence Beverly St. Widow. Physician Dr. D. Buchanan. Informant W. H. Anderson, Galt. Dr. Dan Buchanan was Christie's grand nephew. Christie Ann's will is of some interest. She leaves her estate to her sister Susannah, but she leaves two small bequests to her 'nieces', Mrs Grace Hayes and Miss Phoebe Buchanan, both of Waukegan, Illinois. Miss Phoebe Buchanan is her niece, being the daughter of Christie's brother Archibald. Mrs. Grace Hayes (Lambert, apparently) is her grand niece. There is no evidence that Christie Ann had any children by either of her husbands. As shown with her marriage information for her second marriage, Christiana was married under her maiden name of Buchanan. Just why she was in Grand Rapids at the time of the 1860 census is unknown. She is found in the 1860 census in Grand Rapids in the third ward under the name of Christiann Wood, working as a domestic in the home of Frederick Shriver, coppersmith, born in Prussia. Her age is given as 25, which is about ten years light, but given her name as shown (this census was done on 15 June 1860) and her marriage a few weeks later (July 12), which is shown under her maiden name of Buchanan, it's safe to say that this is Christiana. |
