NoteNo death registration has been found for John Lowther Jr. With his death stated to be in Mexico, this is to be expected, though foreign deaths appearing in Ontario registrations isn't unheard of. What is available is page 8 of the Globe, Toronto, of Friday, August 10, 1888. This has a brief death notice and essentially confirms John's death on August 3 and states that the funeral is on the 10th, the same day as the newspaper.

The 1888 Toronto Necropolis Cemetery burial page does tell us that John Lowther was age 23 years and 8 months. It tells us that he was born in Toronto and died in Mexico on August 3rd. His burial is stated to be August 10th. Cause of death: Accidently shot. He is buried in the family burial plot. Given the week between date of death and date of burial, we must believe that his remains were returned by railroad. The Globe has been searched for a fuller story we no success.

To update the above, John actually died in Deming, New Mexico. He was a telegraph operator with the Western Union and according to the story in the Los Angeles Herald of August 4, 1888, he was subject to fits of melancholia. He took a poison and, when a doctor tried to save him, he shot himself. The article describes John as a young man of excellent quality and habits and to belong to a good family in Toronto, Canada, where his remains will be shipped for interment. This latter is extracted from the California Digital Newspaper Collection.
