An extract from the Canadian Baptist, dated July 30, 1863, tells us that the marriage of James and Ellen took place at the residence of the bride's father on 24th July. Marriage registrations from this era do not typically name the location of the marriage, but Ellen's father's residence was in South Dumfries.

(The marriage registration dates their marriage to July 23 and is the more likely correct.)
