Note | Our information for Ira D. Babcock is limited, but interesting. His name was probably Ira Doud Babcock, though no direct proof has been found. He appears with his parents and siblings in the 1871 census in South Dumfries Township and in the 1881 census in Beverly Township. Beyond this, we know little of the travels or travails of Ira for well over 40 years. Then on 11 May, 1925, aboard the ship the Arundel Castle arriving at Southampton from Durban, Natal, we find in transit to Canada Ira D. Babcock, age 59, country of last residence N. Rhodesia (now Zambia). He is described as a manager. With him is his wife Mary Ann E. Babcock, 58, and three children: Roxa Babcock, 26 Ray Babcock, 25, assistant store keeper Harold Babcock, age 13. Then on 16th May 1925, we find arriving at Quebec from Liverpool aboard the Montcalm, Ira Babcock, age 59, born Galt, Ont., Canada, previously in residence in Galt, Canada, between 1865 and 1887. Again, he is described as a manager and he is visiting with sister Mrs. C. A. Thompson, at Branchton, Ontario. His contact is his son, Mr. Babcock, Dersley P.O., Transvaal, South Africa. He has a passport issued at Broken Hill. He has with him: wife Mary Babcock, born Port Elizabeth, South Africa son Harold, 13, born Johannesburg, South Africa daughter Roxa, 27, born Kroonstad, South Africa son Ray, 24, born Vitenbrge, so spelled, South Africa (Kroonstad was capital of Orange Free State. The location of Vitenbrge has not been found.) The sister he is visiting can only be Cynthia Ann. Then arriving on 29th July, aboard the Empress of France, at Southampton from Quebec, we find: Ira D. Babcock, manager, in transit to Broken Hill, N. Rhodesia Mary A. Babcock, housewife, ditto Roxa I. Babcock, teacher, ditto Ray D. Babcock, asst store keeper, ditto Harold O. Babcock, scholar, ditto. And this is our last view of Ira. |
