Lucinda Sheler died Nov. 24, 1920. Widow. Retired. Born Woodhouse Nov. 28, 1822. Age 97 yrs., 11 mos., 24 dys. At place of death 75 years, in Ontario 97 years. Father Thomas Ebenezer Gilbert, born New Brunswick. Mother's name not given. Informant Mrs. Geo. Kniffen, Port Dover, daughter. Burial Woodhouse Cemetery, Nov 25, 1920.

Per Lucinda's death registration we are informed of her father's name, but not of her mothers.

A transcription of Woodhouse United Church Cemetery by the Nofolk County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society indicates that Ebenezer had more than one wife. This records:

Nancy Lemmon, wife of E. T. Gilbert, born July 25, 1806, died Dec. 4, 1856

Catherine Glendenon, wife of E. T. Gilbert, born March 18, 1801, died Jan. 1, 1826

Given Lucinda's age at death as well as her year of birth as stated on her death registration, her mother was, reasonably, Catherine Glendenon.

There is a problem with Nancy's date of death, for the 1851 census shows E. T. Gilbert with wife Miriam. (The 1861 census shows her as Mary and the 1871 census shows her as Mary Ann. 1836 is a more credible year of death for Nancy, for we find a Talbot District marriage in July of 1837 for Ebenezer Gilbert and Mary Ann Potter. (The full date of the marriage is somewhat obscured, but it's clear enough that they were married in July of 1837.)

Ebenezer's gravestone reads as follows:

In Memory Of Col. E. T. Gilbert, who died 22 Aug., 1871 in his 75th year, a native of New Brunswick.

In 1828, Ebenezer was a captain in the 2nd Regiment of Norfolk Militia. (See page 159, Men of Upper Canada, Militia Nominal Rolls, 1828-1829, Elliott, Walker, Stratford-Devai, 1995, Toronto, Ontario Genealogical Society.) A militia list for later years has yet to be found for Norfolk County, but his rank as colonel probably dates from the 1837 rebellion against the Family Compact.
