ID # 3802, (1842-)
Birth | Mary Misner was born in 1842 at Yarmouth. |
Marriage | She married Ezra Stringer, son of Aaron Stringer and Mary Hunt, on 25 June 1858 at Norfolk County. MS248 reel 11 Vol 44, page 6 Norfolk County Marriage Register Return of marriages solemnized by William Griffin, a minister of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Simcoe, for the year ending 31st day of December, A.D. 1858 Ezra Stringer, 25, born Pelham, residing Woodhouse. Parents Aaron and Mary Stringer. Mary Misner, 16, born Yarmouth, residing Woodhouse. Parents Jacob and Hannah Misener. Witness D. Griffith of Brantford. On June 26th (1858.) |
Note | Mary Misner's family background isn't clear. Her marriage registration has her being born in Yarmouth Township, at the time in the London District, though later a part of Elgin County, and resident in Woodhouse. It also states that her parents were Jacob and Hannah Misner. This presents a problem in that the 1851 census shows two Misner couples by the name of Jacob and Hannah and of somewhat approximate ages. The Jacob and Hannah Misner we must believe to be the parents of Mary reside with their children in Southwold Township in Elgin County. This borders Yarmouth Township. With them are shown six children, including Mary, age 9, who is a reasonable candidate for the wife of Ezra Stringer. Mary's parents are shown as Baptists, ages 43 and 41. We may note that the Misner family of Southwold have with them a son by the name of Titus. The 1851 census also shows us that a Jacob and Hannah Misner reside in Woodhouse. They are shown as Presbyterians, ages 52 and 44, and with them are three children, none of whom are named Mary. By 1861, we must believe that Jacob and Hannah of Southwold have moved to Woodhouse, for we find there present Jacob and Hannah, ages 52 and 50, relgious persuasion unclear. With them is son Titus, but also a Mary F. Stringer, age 18. She is shown as single, but in the household is a male Stringer, age 2, first name unclear. This brings us to the 1998 transcription of a church cemetery known as the Woodhouse United Church Cemetery. This transcription was performed by the Norfolk County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. In it we find: Stone 5. Hannah / wife of / Jacob Misner / Died Aug. 5, 1865 / Aged 54 yes. 9 mos. No information is shown as to the place of burial for Jacob. Going by the age shown on the gravestone (and admittedly approximating), this Hannah is probably the mother of Mary Misner Stringer. |
