BirthJohn Elliot was born on 2 May 1823 at Surrey, England.

The 1861 census in Beverly shows John and Mary Elliot on the same page as Gilbert Field, Mary's father. The 1861 census has a column for year of marriage. Enumerators did not always enter information in this field, but certainly did so on the page for the Elliot and Field families. The year of marriage given for John and Mary is 1849.

NoteDeath reg. 020446-88 Beverly Twp., Wentworth Co.
John Elliott died Sept. 18, 1888. Age 65 yrs., 4 mos., 6 dys. Farmer. Born England. Methodist. Doctor's name illegible. Cause of death diabetes. Informant Mary Elliott, widow, Beverly. Filed on Dec. 31st, 1888.

While the name of the doctor, as written in the above return, is illegible, it does appear that 'Stutt' was the intended name.

A prior death registration for John was filed on September 20th. It reads:

Death reg. 020377-88 Ancaster Twp., Wentworth Co.
John Elliott died on date not stated. Male. Age not stated. Farmer. Born Canada. Death diabetes mellitus one year. Physician Dr. Stutt. Informant R. E. Stutt, physicion Dundas. Religious affiliation of decedant not stated. Filed Septeber 20, 1888.

For whatever reason, John's wife filed his death registration some three months after his passing. She filed this in Beverly Township and the implication might at least initially be taken that he did indeed die in Beverly. Dr. Stutt, however, filed his return for John's death two days after his passing. Both forms appear to indicate that Dr. Stutt was the attending doctor. Dr. Stutt's residence was evidently in Dundas. The town of Dundas straddles the border of Ancaster and Flamborough West Townships, but Dr. Stutt submitted the registration of death for John Elliott to the registrar of the Township of Ancaster. With all this mixup it is possible that John died in Beverly, but the chance of this seems remote. Rather more likely he died in Ancaster or even in the town of Dundas. Lists of obituaries have been consulted, but no sure record for the place of John's death has been found. Since both Beverly and Ancaster Townships are in Wentworth County, John's place of death is shown as such. For the time being it's about as close as we may get.

The Hamilton branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has done a transcription of Copetown Cemetery. This includes a record of John and Mary Elliot's gravestone. This clearly records the birth of John and Surrey England on 2 May, 1823, and dates his passing to 18 September, 1888.
