| Note | Adelaide is shown with her parents and siblings in the 1891 census when it was taken in Turtle Mountain, Selkirk, Manitoba. As noted, Adelaide married Thomas Coulter at Winnipeg on 6 March, 1895, in Winnipeg. At the time of the 1901 census, Addie and Thomas Coulter are in Turtle Moutain, no longer shown as being in the Selkirk District, but rather in the Lisgar District. Thomas is a farmer and the census page appears to show his birth as being in Quebec. With them are three sons, William, Roy, and Clayton, ages 5, 4, and 3 respectively. They are all born in Manitoba. In the 1906 Western Canada census, Thomas and Adelaide are shown as being in the Souris District and, probably, still in Turtle Mountain. . Added to their family is son Leslie, age 2. The 1916 census has them at Turtle Mountain in the Souris District. With them are children Eugene, age 6, and Alma, age 3. In the 1921 census Thomas Coulter is evidently a widower. Working with the Manitoba Vital Statistics web site and information on Find-a-Grave, we may say that Adelaide Muma Coulter died on May 19, 1919, at age 47 and that she is buried in Killarney and District Cemetery. This is essentially provided so that birth/marriage/death registrations may be ordered. Births are only listed from 'more than one hundred years ago' and this is an index-only listing. Looking over Turtle Mountain births, it is evident that there were other Coulter families than that of Thomas and Adelaide. Father's names, for index purposes, are not given, but the mothers' given names are. Other mothers, such as Ellen and Tressa do appear, but Adelaide also appears. Since the names of the children of Adelaide compare well with such census information that we have, it is probably safe to say that we have a reasonably accurate list of live births. Census years show Turtle Mountain in different districts - Selkirk, Souris. The birth index, however, identifies Turtle Mountain as a Regional Municipality. This sounds a bit onerous for what is probably a small place, but since the family is identified consistently as living at Turtle Mountain, we won't quibble. The birth registration number for each child is shown in the brief notes that we have for each. |
