Gore District Marriage Register

Gabriel Cornwall and Phoebe Coleman, both of Brantford, were married on March 19, 1845. Witnesses John Cornwall and Mary Ann Cornwall. By Publication (of Banns)

Gabriel and Phoebe are shown in a list of marriages performed by Thomas Fawcett, Wesleyan Minister. Gabriel and Phoebe are listed on page 26, and the clergyman is shown on page 27.

The surname for the second witness, Mary Ann Cornwall, could be interpreted otherwise, but an examination of the handwriting for Gabriel's name and that of the witness John, makes it clear enough that her surname is Cornwall.

Thomas Fawcett, the clergyman who married Gabriel and Phoebe, was a Wesleyan Methodist minister. Something of his history appears in this tree. The locations where he served aren't clear on all points, but since his first wife died in 1848 and is said to have died at Brantford and he is said to have served on the Brantford Circuit, then he was probably the regular Wesleyan Methodist minister in Brantford at the time.

DeathHe died on 22 May 1863 at Vicksburg, Mississippi, at age 38.
BurialHe was buried at National Cemetery, Vicksburg, Mississippi.
NoteSee the Bell-Cornwell Family Record, section 2, page 6, paragraph 1. This tells that Gabriel Cornwell is buried with his fallen comrades of the Union Army in the National
Cemetery at Vicksburg, Mississippi. His name is said to be inscribed on the wall of the Illinois Monument and also on his wife's headstone in Poplar Grove Cemetery.

The United States National Parks Service has a website for the Vicksburg National Military Park in Mississippi. Included with this is a list of interments and Gabriel's name does not appear on the list, though to believe that he is buried here is reasonable. There is conflicting information, however, that he is in fact buried with his wife Phoebe in Poplar Grove Cemetery. The family's history tells that Gabriel's nephew, John N. Coleman, was present when Gabriel died at Vicksburg. John's mother died when he was two and he spent many years with Gabriel and Phoebe. It is said that John was bitter about Gabriel's death, for he died in what some believed to be a futile effort. John might well have arranged for his uncle's remains to be returned to Boone County in Illinois.
