Note | Samuel H. Coleman appears with his parents, John and Margaret, in Boone County, Illinois, in the 1850 U.S. census. He is said to have been born in New York State. In 1860, he is at Manchester in Delaware Twp. in Delaware County in Iowa and here he is also said to have been born in New York State. With Samuel and his parents at the time of the 1850 census at Boone County is John (possibly followed with the initial N). A history provided by a descendant of Gabriel Cornwell states that John N. Coleman, Gabriel's nephew, was present at Vicksburg when Gabriel was ordered to lead a charge against an impregnable position. Gabriel was killed and young John was said to be very bitter about what happened to his uncle. Apparently young John had spent some time living with Gabriel's family. At least one source has it that John N. Coleman was the son of Samuel's brother Phillip, but John's G.A.R. card has his father as Sam. We do not know the name of Samuel's first wife. We do not know if she lived long enough to join the family journey to Boone County in Illinois. What follows amounts to little more than thoughts, but Samuel H. Coleman does not appear in the Library & Archives Canada's list of marriage bonds. This would imply that there was a church wedding with the reading of banns. The Gore District marriage register exists with records from 1842, but nothing appears for Samuel. The possibility does exist that Samuel and his first wife were united in marriage by John Cornell, the pastor of the United Brethren church at Sheffield village. No book of marriages of John Cornell's decades at Sheffield has survived. The one remaining possible record would then be in a family bible. With luck, perhaps the name of Samuel's first wife and a date and place of marriage will be found. The following is uncertain, but apparently Samuel H. Coleman married again in approximately 1850, for by the 1860 census he is located in Delaware Township in Delaware County in Iowa, and he is shown as being age 41 and born in New York. With him is wife Louisa, 29, and children Phebe A., age 9, Commodore P., age unclear, Alice J., age unclear, and William, age 2. If this Samuel H. Coleman is in fact the son of John W. Coleman (and he likely is), then he died November 21, 1898, according to Find-a-Grave, and is buried in Vegors Cemetery, Stratford, Webster County, Iowa. His (second) wife Louisa is said to be buried in Riverside, Oklahoma. |
