Philip Bender died January 28th, 1883. Age 1. Farmer. Methodist. Born Niagara Falls, Ontario. Physician G. C. Clark, M.D., of Niagara Falls, N.Y. Informant John Bender, son, Niagara Falls, Ontario.

When Philip Bender was born, the community he lived in was probably simply Stamford Township. Census information for 1861 and 1871 places him in Clifton, later a part of the city of Niagara Falls. Before 'Clifton', the local community was named Elgin. He is said to have lived in this location all his life (see notes before). Certainly, his marriage record from 1827 locates him in Stamford Township. If he was indeed born in the Clifton area then to locate his birth in Stamford would be the more accurate.

Philip Bender's death registration dates his death to January 28th, 1883. The page with his registration shows a total of six registrations and all dates are reasonably sequential. The family gravestone shows Philip's date of death as January 28th, 1882, obviously an error and indicating that the inscription was made some time after his death. We may now say that this is indeed the case.

See Burial Records and Notations of William Dalton 1845 to 1916, Douglas A. Robbins, St. Catharines, 1991, page 50, 1883. This quotes Dalton's notes and dates the burial of Philip Bender in Drummond Hill Cemetery on January 31st, 1883. Dalton mentions that Philip lived in the Town of Niagara on the river bank near the new suspension bridge all his life and states that he was one of the first settlers. Dalton tells the story that Philip drove the oxen that drew the artillery from Niagara to Queenston during the War of 1812. Considering that Philip was approximately 11 years of age in 1812, this might be a bit of a stretch, but perhaps not out of the question.

Where Dalton's entry gets interesting is that he adds a rider to his 1883 entry on Nov. 17th, 1885 and tells that he took 'old Mr. Bender' up out of this yard and took him to Fairview Cemetery.

It's evident from the early ledgers that there were Benders buried in Drummond Hill in earlier years. This was likely originally the family cemetery. Another reason, however, that Philip was originally buried in Drummond Hill is that Fairview Cemetery was opened in 1883, but not until after his death, the first burial taking place on July 20th. For this, refer to Fairview Family History, 1883-2008.

The list of children we have for Philip and Elizabeth is taken in part from a transcription of the family gravestone in Fairview Cemetery. Some survived to adulthood, but four are shown to have died very young. The four are probably all still buried in Drummond Hill Cemetery in Stamford Township. Daughter Myra who died in 1864 is almost certainly still buried in Drummond Hill. The Niagara Falls Cemeteries web page has an excellent array of photographs of gravestones for all cemeteries. This includes worn and almost unreadable stones in Drummond Hill Cemetery, Benders included. The badly worn Bender stones, apparently in part for children of Philip and Elizabeth, are in plot 0417. The Niagara Peninsula Branch of the OGS, under publication M013 does have an index of plot holders for Drummond Hill Cemetery. These are undated and, while betimes of limited assistance, the list shows plot 417 as being purchased by a J. F. Hall - which may or may not be correct so far as the Benders are concerned, but of little assistance. Some years ago a staff member advised that early Drummond Hill records were in poor condition. Perhaps with time this has improved.
