Note | The Hamilton Branch of the Ontario Genealogy Society provides a transcription of Troy Cemetery in Beverly Township. This was done in 1990 . It agrees with a transcription done by Harley Misener many years earlier. The transcription for the gravestone of Malachi Sager and his wife Sarah Dean reads as follows. Malachi Sager died 20 Apr 1892 aged 95 yrs., 5 mos., 20 dys. / his wife Sarah Dean died 20 Apr 1881 aged 76 yrs, 5 mos., 11 dys Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep From which none ever wake to weep A calm and undesturbed repose Unbroken by the last of foes The basic transcription above also agrees with a photo of the gravestone, still in excellent condition, as it appears on Canadianheadstones.com. The verse is taken from the photograph, for it does not appear in either of the two transcriptions. John A. Cornell, in his Pioneers of Beverly, 1889, on page 24, tells us that Malachi Sager, along with Adam Misener and Henry Mow (Moe), was one of the first trustees of Troy Cemetery. On page 25, he tells of an interview with Malachi who stated that he had been born in the State of New York and that his grandfather had been with Wolfe when he took Quebec. In 1912, The Rockton World's Fair issued a booklet commemorating the fair, but also chock full of photos of Beverly Township pioneers, though most of these worthies were deceased by some years. Page 118 has a photo of Malachi Sager Sr. The list of children for Malachi and Sarah is, initially, taken from A History of the People of Troy, 1947. This appears under the Sager tree on page 30. Expanded information is being sought. |
