Janet (--?--)
ID # 3298, (1812-)
Birth | Janet (--?--) was born in 1812 at England. |
Marriage | She married Thomas Smith. |
Note | The wife of Thomas Smith is shown as Elizabeth in the 1851 census and Jannett in the 1861 census. With the evidence that we have, this likely revolves around her having two given names. Thomas and 'Elizabeth' are shown as ages 46 and 40 in 1851; Thomas and Jannett in 1861 are shown as 56 and 50. Elizabeth is shown as being born in Wales in 1851; Jannett, in 1861, is shown as being born in England. Also, the family is shown as being Presbyterian in the 1851 census and Church of England in 1861. Still, we must believe Elizabeth and Jannett to be the same person. Samuel Smith, the husband of Lavinia Buchanan, married twice again after Lavinia's death. Since Samuel was 14 at the time of the 1851 census where his mother is shown as Elizabeth, and since we must give him some credit for knowing who his mother was, and since, in both the later marriage registrations he shows his mother as Janet Smith, then Janet, or Jannette, is the name by which she generally went. There is some inconclusive evidence that Jannette's maiden name was Davis. This is unproven. |
