NoteHe See Ancaster's Heritage, Vol. 1., 1973, The Ancaster Township Historical Society, page 19. Under a section entitled The Oldest Old Timers, by T. Roy Woodhouse, we are told that Peter Gordon was born in 1752. We have no direct confirmation of this, but it is at least a plausible date.

The same volume, page 289, states that the Crown Patent for lot 43 on the 4th concession of Ancaster was assigned to Nathaniel Pettit in 1801. The underlying paragraph states that Nathaniel moved to Ancaster to live with son-in-law Peter Gordon and his family. Where this story provides us with some conflict is that the Ancaster book tells that Peter was married to Nathaniel's daughter Mary; the Annals of the Forty would have it that he was married to Nathaniel's daughter Catherine. This remains to be sorted out.

There is one more source that states that Peter Gordon's wife was Mary Pettit and not Catherine.

The Hamilton Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society did transcriptions for Wentworth County cemeteries some years ago. One of them was the Bowman United Church cemetery which they transcribed the cemetery in 1983 and wrote a revision thereof in 2004. Bowman church was originally Methodist and, with church union in 1925, became a part of the United Church of Canada. The transcription of the cemetery shows at the end some names that apparently appeared on stones which have not survived. Three sources for this are quoted, one of them being the Crowell Smith papers. This shows the following:

Gordon, Peter born 1727? Husband of Mary Pettit.

1727 seems an unlikely year of birth for a husband of either Catherine or Mary Pettit. The question mark shown after the year 1727 is per the transcription.
