An interesting biography may be found for Lionel Ridout in The Dictionary of Canadian Biography. Lionel's father was George Charmbury Ridout who emigrated from Bristol to Philadelphia in 1820 and then moved on to York (Toronto) the following year. When Upper Canada College first opened in 1830, Lionel was one of its first students. In 1844, he moved on to London and ran a successfull hardware business. He married Louisa Lawrason in 1846. In later years he invested heavily in real estate, which led to his financial downfall, but by this time suffered from cancer of the tongue. He sought treatment in Canada and abroad without success and died in London in 1859. It is stated that one of the executors of his estate was his father-in-law, Lawrence Lawrason Jr. who took care of Louisa and her children after Lionel's death.
