Matthew Xavier Carr
ID # 3208, (1823-)
| Baptism | Matthew Xavier Carr was baptized in 1823 at England. |
| Marriage | He married Sophia Fawcett, daughter of Thomas Fawcett and Margaret C. Shaw, on 18 June 1861 at Lincoln County. MS248 reel 10, Vol. 33. Lincoln County, page 26. 1861 - Return of marriages for the year 1861 No. 6 Solemnized by Rev'd Michael Fawcett - A Minister of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. Matthew H. Carr, 28, residing Brantford, born England. Parents Matthew and Sarah. Sophia S. Fawcett, 18, residing Grimsby, born Brantford. Parents Thomas and Margaret. Witnesses: William Nelles and Joseph Palmer, both of Grimsby. Date of marriage June 18, 1861. In one or two places on the registration the handwriting is difficult to read, but the county clerk does appear to have Matthew's middle initial as H. Other information considered, his middle initial was X. His middle name was Xavier. The officiating clergyman, Michael Fawcett, was Sophia's uncle. Sophia's father Thomas was en route to see his brother Michael in Grimsby when the train on which he was a passenger derailed and he subsequently died of his injuries. The marriage registration does not specifically locate the marriage, but the couple was almost certainly married in Grimsby. |
| Burial | He was buried on 5 March 1883 at Austin, Texas. |
| Note | Our information for Matthew Xavier Carr is limited. The 1883 Warner & Beers History of Brant County does tell on page 261 that he was an auditor in Brantford (apparently with the city council) in 1864. Page 193 describes him as a deputy reeve in the Town of Paris in 1872. Beyond that, it does appear that he was a widower by the time that, at age 28, he married Sophia Fawcett in 1861. London & Middlesex Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society provides a transcription of Old St. Paul's Anglican Cemetery in London, Ontario. Page 19 shows Matthew 'Zavier' Carr as the purchaser of space for two graves in plot X14. There are two burials, one on 5 May 1853 for Mary Clarke, age 72, widow. The other is dated 15 August, 1858, for Lodonshey Carr, age 29. Her husband is shown as Postmaster, Brantford. (Lodonshey's correct name may have been something like Lodosky, or Lodusky, Ozburn. It may be that her Ozburn parents and siblings are buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in London. (This has not been researched.) There is some newspaper information placing Mattew in Texas in the 1880s. This brings us to publication 104 of the Brantford OGS, Deaths Register from Grace Anglican Church, Brantford. This shows: Matthias X. Carr being buried on 5 March, 1883, in Austin, Texas. He is described as a banker. The Anglican Church often Latinized names and this is what Matthew/Mathias may represent. Note: The assemblers of the above index believed the dates to be those of burial. |
