| Note | John Wilkie Lawrason was mayor of Hamilton from 1909 to 1910. Page 14 of the 1912 Rockton World's Fair book provides something of his background in Beverly. It tells that he spent four years teaching in Beverly before studying for law. He graduated from Osgood Hall, Toronto, in 1899. A photo of Wilkie accompanies the text. What follows is almost certainly John Wilkie Lawrason's birth registration - with an anomaly: Birth reg. 017509-71 Blenheim, Oxford County John Webster Lawrason born May 13, 1871. Parents James Lawrason and Jeanette. Informant James Lawrason, farmer, Blenheim. Registered May 27, 1871. John Wilkie Lawrason has not been found in the 1901 Canadian census. He has been found in Dundas, Ontario, in 1911, where he shows his birth as being in April of 1871. Since James and Jeanette are unquestionably John's parents, it appears that the clerk writing the above had a problem deciphering someone's handwriting, or the James and Jeanette later changed their minds about John's middle name. It sometimes appears to be the situation that parents will change their minds about the child's name between registration and baptism. This may not be the situation with Baptists who have adult baptism. Likely, the above birth registration is in error. It isn't reasonable that the child is anyone else than John Wilkie Lawrason. |
