Peter Columba Lawrason
ID # 3061, (1838-)
Father | James Lawrason (1806-1889) |
Mother | Laney Bauslaugh (1812-1884) |
Birth | Peter Columba Lawrason was born in 1838. |
Marriage | He married Charlotte Hall on 25 June 1866 at Grey County. MS248 Reel 6 Vol. 13, page 131 Grey County The following is in a list of marriages solemnized by Isaac Baker, Wesleyan Minister. Peter Columba Lawrason, 26, born Canada, residing Brant (Township). Parents James and 'Jane' Lawrason. Charlotte Cunningham, 26, born Canada, residing Brant. Parents William and Jane Hall. Witness William Scott of Brant. On June 25th, 1866. The county marriage registrations from this era do not typically state the marital status of the parties. From Charlotte's name as given, however, and noting the names of her parents, she was evidently a widow. Unquestionably, this marriage registration appears in the Grey County marriage register. Brant Township is located in Bruce County. Rev. Isaac Baker was located in Thornbury in Grey County from 1866 to 1869. It is possible that he traveled and performed marriages away from his charge, and that he simply recorded the marriage in the Grey County book. Thornbury is some distance from Brant Township in Bruce County and there were likely Wesleyan clergy closer. Probably, the bride and groom were married in or near Thornbury and so the entry in the Grey County marriage register would be correct. Barring a newspaper article, we can't be sure. |
Note | Peter Lawrason is with his parents at the time of the 1861 census in Blenheim Township. At the time of the 1871 census, he is with his wife, Charlotte Hall. With them are two children, Ophelia, age 9, and Samuel Hall, age 7. Both are shown with the name Lawrason, but it's clear that they are Charlotte's children by her first marriage to Samuel Cunningham. Ophelia died young, but Samuel Hall Cunningham appears in later records which make it clear that he was born a Cunningham and he used that name later in life. Also with Peter and Charlotte are three children of their current marriage, and, apparently, the only later children that they had: James William, born 1866; Theodore Nelson, born 1868; and Lanie May, born 1871. In 1881, the family is in Blenheim Township. In 1891 and 1901, they are in Stratford. In the 1912 city directory for Cleveland, Ohio, published by the Cleveland Directory Co., page 932, we find our last record of Peter C. Lawrason. He is shown with son 'Charles' at 889 East 144th. No spouses are mentioned. We have no information as to Charlotte's presence or earlier demise. |
