| Note | It may be that Eleanor (Nelly) Purvis was born in New Jersey, but we have no information as to her age and a place of burial has not been found. We do know her date of death, however. Nelly's will appears on microfilm MS638 reel 3, Locality of Record, Hamilton, Wentworth County, Ontario. Surrogate Court Records, Estate files 126-195, item no. 1, file nbr. 148, Nelly Hanes, Wentworth, 1832. (This file was originally of the Gore District, which was headquartered at Hamilton.) The paperwork attached is dated 10 January, 1832. Nelly's will is dated 26 November, 1822. Nelly is making son George the heir of an 80 acre piece of property. The documents attached to the will refer to Nelly as a widow, so we must believe Peter to be dead, probably prior to her writing her will in 1822. The file is an early example of Letters of Administration being applied for with will annexed. The apparent reason for the appliction being that the two excutors, Samuel Betzner and John Keagy Sr., resign their responsibilities as executors to George Hanes, Nelly's son. This appears to be by mutual agreement. A page of the file is a signed oath by George Hanes as to the authenticity of Nelly's will and he also states that she 'departed this life the 20th day of November last.' Since his oath is also dated January 10, 1832, we must believe that Nelly died 20 November 1831. |
