A web page for the Galt Collegiate Institute indicates that Syril served in the Canadian Army during the First World War. Syril's attestation papers, signed on April 13, 1915, show his full name. He signs his name as De Mille. He gives his parents' address as 68 Brook Street in Galt. He began his service as a private and finished as a lieutenant. At the time of the 1921 census, Syril is with his parents in Galt. By the 1930 U.S. census, he is in Rock Island, Illinois, and by the time of the 1940 census he is in Bakersfield, California. In these last two censuses, he is shown as being married to Agnes with a son Victor H. In 1942, Syril and Agnes are living in Carlsbad, California. He was enlisted in the old man's draft for the Second World War. This was for men who were born after April of 1877 but before February of 1897. Syril's year of death and place of burial is to be found on Find-a-Grave. |
