Note | The following birth registration is written unclearly so far as the second name is concerned and can only be guessed at. Birth reg. 018435-93 St. Catharines, Lincoln Co. Albert 'Halmer' Gadsby born 23 January, 1893. Parents Albert E. Gadsby and Nellie Vrooman. Father a stone cutter. Informant Albert E. Gadsby, St. Catharines. Elmer appears as 'Ellmer' in the 1901 census and as 'A. Elmer' in the 1911 census. However, Ellmer signed up with the Canadian Army at Toronto on January 12, 1915. There, he gives his name as Albert Ellmer Gadsby, so this is how he is shown here. On his attestation form, he shows as his next of kin his father, Albert Gadsby, 65 Westchester Avenue, St. Catharines. He shows that, to this point, he has served in a militia unit, 7th Battery, C.F.A. The disposition of the will of Ellmer's uncle, Walter R. Vrooman, was published in the 21 October 1936 edition of the Clyde Herald in Clyde, New York, and as of that date, Ellmer Gadsby was living in St. Catharines. |
