| Note | We are at a loss for reasonable early census records for Susan Moriah (or Maria) Wilber. On her marriage registration she gives her parentage as W. H. Wilber and Maria Wilber. They are almost certainly William Hezekiah Wilber and his wife Maria Bayley. For them, however, our records are slim. A stone for Wm. Hezekiah Wilber in Pioneer Presbyterian Cemetery, St. George is, for the moment, about the best we can do. It does clearly identify his father as Jeremiah Wilber. Beyond that, the date of death on the available photo is unreadable. A transcription done some years ago by the Brant County branch of the OGS dates his death to 1861 followed by a question mark. This is likely incorrect. Susan's age is inconsistent with several documents and over time. Working with the 1851 and 1861 censuses in South Dumfries, 1839 or 1840 is a good estimate for her year of birth. Her gravestone in Cook's United Church Cemetery in Caradoc Township, suggests that she was born about 1841 though this might be a bit light. It is probably safe to say that in the 1871 census the Susan Wilber, age 29, with Susan Wilber, age 74, is indeed Susan Moriah Wilber. The elder Susan's daughter Susan Catherine Wilber is long married to George Currey. What took Susan Moriah Wilber to Strathroy where she was evidently residing at the time of her marriage in 1879 is for the present unknown.
