Joseph Cathline

ID # 2165
MarriageJoseph Cathline married Naomi Jane Vrooman, daughter of Solomon Secord Vrooman and Mary Brown
NoteAs mentioned under the notes for Naomi Vrooman, her husband was probably Joseph Napoleon Cathline. Also and probably, he was the son of Matthew Cathline, who, in 1850, petitioned the governor general for land based on his service in Captain John Powell's company of artillery during the War of 1812 (yes, a rather late petition). Matthew appears on the payrolls of Powell's company with his name spelled as Kathline. The name is unusual and only one family, that of Matthew, is to be found in the Niagara area.

The Abstract Index for land transactions for the Town of Niagara (Niagara on the lake), lot 151, shows the purchase of the east half of this one acre lot on July 22, 1840. On January 12, 1848, Matthew Cathline sells half of this lot to Joseph Napoleon Cathline, in other words a quarter acre.

The actual land transaction has been found at the Archives of Ontario on microfilm GS2003 Niagara, Lincoln County Deeds, 1847-1865, grant nbr. 486. Other than providing the information above, the names of the witnesses for the transaction, Wm. B. Winterbottom and Augusta Cathline, provide us with no further clues.

Joseph does not appear further in the land transaction record. It appears from later entries that the quarter acre reverted to Matthew Cathline, for on October 19, 1854, Matthew sold this same property to a Walter Follette against a mortgage. The property reverted to Cathline in 1858 on a Sherriff's deed. When daughter Illerda died in 1854 and her death notice was placed in the June 14th edition of the Niagara Mail, she is shown as the daughter of Josh. Cathline. (The 'h' of Josh is superscribed and makes it likely that it is an abbreviation for Joseph.) None of this provides us with a certainty, but it seems that Joseph died during the year 1854.

Joseph has not been found in the 1851 census of Canada West. Naomi is living in her father's house along with her daughter, though the pages are out of order. Illerda does appear there, but the whole household, children included, are listed in order of age. (It's almost as though Solomon lined his family up and said to the enumerator: There, go to it)

From the Niagara Mail evidence, mentioned above, it is at least reasonable to say that Naomi's husband was Joseph Cathline and that he was probably the Joseph Napoleon Cathline mentioned in the above referred land transaction.
