| Note | With such evidence as we have, it is possible to say that Gideon Forsyth married twice after the death of Catherine Vrooman, his first wife. A Norfolk County record survives as follows: Forsythe Gideon, 48, Woodhouse, Scotland, son of Walter Forsythe and Margaret Rolph married 28 Feb 1860 Mary Ann Elliot, 21, Woodhouse, Ireland, daughter of Joseph Elliot and Marjery Anderson. According to an index, Mary Ann appears to be buried in St. Johns Anglican Cemetery, Woodhouse Township, Norfolk County. Gideon's third marriage took place in the town of Simcoe, Norfolk County: Gideon Forsyth, age 57, widower, residing Woodhouse, born Roxborough, Scotland, yeoman, parents Walter and Margaret Forsyth. Presbyterian. Caroline Wade, 36, widow, residing Windham, born Charlotteville. Parents Mary and Caroline Brown. Church of England. Witnesses Priscilla Harris of Simcoe and Mary Carpenter of Chicago. On 14 October, 1872, at Simcoe. At the time of the 1871 census at Woodhouse, Gideon is described as a widower. With him are two children, apparently his sons, shown as Willie age 8 and Francis age 6. If this interpretation is correct then it seems reasonable that they are the sons of Mary Ann Elliot. Beyond this census, however, no further record has been found for these children. |
