NoteInformation for the name of Mary Jones' husband, William Hodgkinson, is taken from Mary's petition for land datelined Niagara, 6 January, 1808 (this is found on microfilm C-2046, image 210, Vol. 226, bundle H number 8). She describes herself as the daughter of James Jones, late of Grantham, enrolled U.E. Loyalist, and as the wife of William Hodgkinson. She gives her residence as the Township of Grantham.

Also, the Niagara Peninsula Branch of the OGS has published a paper on the Hodgkinson Family Burying Ground (publication 3272), which is essentially based on correspondence between Fred Parnell and Janet Carnochan. This provides us with the inscription information for the gravestones of William and Mary. Some care should be taken with this for Fred may have been, to some extent, operating from memory.

The Crowder book (see notes for Mary's father James), shows James and Christiana's son Andrew, at age 17 as of December, 1783, as being the oldest child. Marcy, or Mary, is shown as the second child and is age 15. Mary's dates of birth and death are per Fred Parnell, however the the list of James' family members as it appears in Crowder's book is essentially a victualling list for Capt. McKinnon's company in the Corps of Rangers (Butlers Rangers) and, accurary-wise, this probably has the edge.

The OGS transcription (#3272) of the Hodgkinson Family Burying Ground was done by Maggie Parnell, obviously a family member. Considering the age, even by the time of Maggie's work, quite ancient history of the Hodgkinson Family Cemetery, this is really an excellent document and, for the interested researcher, well worth obtaining. It is available in print or PDF format from Ontario Ancestors.
