NoteInformation kindly provided by a descendant of George Laws Vrooman includes Leah Vrooman Leonard among George's children. We find a record in the Jo Daviess County marriage book showing her marriage to Eliphalet Leonard on 9 October, 1842. She appears in the 1850 census with her husband Elijah Leonard (almost certainly Eliphalet). She is age 24 and, as with a number of her siblings, her place of birth is shown as New York. In the 1860 census at Courtland Township in Jo Daviess County, in the 1870 census at Rush in Jo Daviess, and in the 1880 census at Rush, she is shown as born in Canada. The 1850 census shows her living in the household of Adam Vroman and next to George Laws Vrooman. Leah's daughter Martha is working in the household of Abram Vroman in Courtland Township in the 1860 census.

We may document Leah's place as a daughter of George L. Vrooman rather more solidly. Book 24 of deeds, page 390, for Jo Daviess County, relates to a legal action between Sarah Vrooman, widow of George L. Vrooman and George's children. Leah Leonard is one of the plaintiffs, along with Abram Vrooman, the minor heirs of Adam Vrooman dec'd., Mary E. Smith and John Smith, Elias Vrooman, Nancy Laird, Eunice E. Vrooman, Widow, the minor heirs of John Vrooman, and Margaret Wood and James Wood.

Leah's husband appears with her at the time of the 1850 census in Jo Daviess County. She appears to be a widow as of the 1860 census and is still living in Jo Daviess at the time of the 1880 census.

The best information at the moment comes from a descendant of Leah's who says that she followed children to California and died in 1898 and is buried in Bellevue Cemetery & Mausoleum, Ontario, San Bernardino Co., California. A photo of her gravestone appears on Find-a-Grave.

It may be that Leah spent her last years with daughter Mary Jane and her husband John Moore. They appear with their children in the 1900 census at Cucamonga, San Bernardino, California. Son Edwin Leonard is also in California at the time of the 1900 census. He is residing in Anaheim, Orange County, and is shown as single.
