April 25, 1880, at Croton.
Eugene W. Cavender, age 24, farmer, and Carrie L. Vrooman, age 19, both residing Croton. Eugene was born in Michigan and Carrie in Canada. The name of the minister is quite faded, but may be Geo. L. Grant. The witnesses were Lawrence and May Cavender, both of Croton.

NoteThe evidence that Caroline (Carrie) Vrooman, the wife of Eugene Cavender of Newaygo County in Michigan, was a daughter of James Vrooman and Eliza Smith is circumstantial, but compelling. The 1930 census at Grant Township in Newaygo shows her immigration year as 1877. This may or may not be accurate, but will at least be close. Add to that, she and Eugene had a son that they named Milo Emerson Cavender. Carrie had brothers Milo and Emerson.

The Cavenders of Croton Township lived near the family of John Probasco, master blacksmith. After John became a widow, he, at some point, met and married Caroline's mother, Eliza Smith Vrooman. Why they married in Kansas is unknown, but Eliza had son Stephen with her at the time and they appear in the 1880 census in Kansas.

Our list of children for Eugene and Caroline is taken from birth registrations, made available by FamilySearch.org, and census information. The 1910 census at Grant Township, Newaygo County, Michigan, is useful and provides some confirmation. Birth registrations have not been found for all children. It also appears that the children had second given names that did not necessarily appear in their birth registrations. The list we have is subject to correction.
