NoteMatilda's marriage registration gives her surname as Bishop and her parents as Jeremiah and Sarah Bishop. Other records indicate, however, that her birth name was Hull. She appears with Jeremiah and Sarah Bishop in the 1861 census in Ancaster, age 7, but her name is shown as Matilda Hull. In 1871 she is still with them, age 17, but her name is shown as Bishop. She was enumerated twice, for she is shown as a servant in the home of William and Emily Brown in Beverly Township.

Her death registration reads:

032839-25 Preston, Waterloo County.
Matilda Jane Main, age 71 yrs, 3 mos., 16 dys. Married. Born Jerseyville July 20/54. At place of death 3 years. In Ontario 71 years. Father Henry Hull, born England; mother Jane Collins, born Belfast, Ireland. Informant Emerson Main of Preston, husband.
Date of death November 5, 1925; date of burial, Preston Cemetery, November 7, 1925.

The inscription on her gravestone, with Emerson, reads:

E6-26 In/ loving memory of/ Emerson Main/ died May 26, 1937/ in his 82nd year/ Matilda J. Hull/ wife
of/Emerson Main/ died Nov.7, 1925/ in her 72nd year/ Only a little while./MAIN.

Marriage registration aside, it is obvious from the 1861 and 1871 censuses that Jeremiah and Sarah Bishop are too old to be her natural parents.

Henry and Jane Hull, ages 48 and 37, appear in the 1851 census in Ancaster with children William 15, Mary 10, Henry 5, and James 1. This will predate Matilda's birth by about three years since the 1851 census was taken in January of 1852.
