Martha Main, 20, spinster, Wesleyan Methodist. Born Beverly, residing North Dumfries. Parents George and Margaret Main. Witnesses Mary H. Andrews and Emily Andrews, both of St. George. Clergyman Rev. Alfred Andrews. On August 6, 1873, at St. George. It would appear that the witnesses were members of the clergyman's family. The marriage registration is rather faded. Martha's name may have been recorded thereon as Maria. If so, likely, David Baptie, the South Dumfries Township clerk, had difficulty with the handwriting of the reporting clergyman. From a reasonably generous record of documentation, we may say that her name was Martha. |

| Note | Martha Jane Main was born 19 days before her mother's death. With the minimal information thus far at our disposal, it would appear that George Main, Martha's father, remarried fairly soon to Margaret Vrooman. This, considering that Martha's half brother, William Emerson Vrooman, was born in 1855. We have no evidence that Smith Buchanan and Martha Main ever had children. William Smith, Smith Buchanan's nephew, was likely something of a son to them. Death reg. 034037-23 North Dumfries, Waterloo County Martha Jane Buchanan, age 69, born Beverly Twp. January 6, 1854. Married. Place of death C7-L4, North Dumfries. At place of death 4 years, in Ontario and in Canada 65 years (what is meant by 65 years isn't clear. Martha was born in Canada. If she resided out of the country for any period of time, we have no record of it at this point.) Parents George Main and Margaret Hamilton, both said to be born in Beverly Township.
