| Note | If we had but the marriage registration for John Hammond and Susannah Hall to go by, we would read the name of John's father as Daniel (the handwriting is such that the name David is also a possibility). The family stone in St. George Cemetery, however, reads in part: Ann Smith wife of John Hammond Sr. died Jan 13, 1884, aged 95 yrs 6 mos. That a name was carved in stone does not automatically make it correct, but almost certainly is. The marriage registration as it appears in the Wentworth County registration book is a transcription by the county clerk of the clergyman's handwriting and transcribing from a similar page, which most clergy worked with, could occasionally result in error. Since the stone for Ann refers to her husband as John Hammond Senior, we will take this as correct. We have no information as to John's birth and death or information as to his marriage. Given that son John was born in Ireland, we must believe that John Hammond and Ann Smith were married in Ireland. |
