Reta's obituary in the Big Valley Gazette, Bieber, California, on 6 December 1899 read:
"RETA SUMMERS: The many friends of Mr & Mrs Perry Summers will be pained to learn of the death of their infant daughter, Reta, which occurred in Cedarville last Saturday morning. We did not learn the cause of the child's death. The bereaved parents have the sympathy of their many friends in this valley.

DIED: SUMMERS - In Cedarville, Modoc Cnty, CA, on 2 Dec 1899 at 7:30 AM, Reta-infant daughter of Perry & Lillian Summers, age 7 mos-20 days."2
